Background of the study
Religious institutions often play a vital role in maintaining social harmony and resolving conflicts in communities. In Warri South, where ethnic and communal tensions have periodically escalated, religious organizations have emerged as key mediators in dispute resolution. These institutions leverage their moral authority and community influence to foster dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding. The religious leaders, by providing platforms for conflict resolution, contribute significantly to easing social tensions and promoting community cohesion (Ighogboja, 2023). Their involvement ranges from interfaith dialogues to community-based mediation sessions, often resulting in the de-escalation of potentially volatile situations. The spiritual guidance offered by these institutions not only addresses the immediate conflict but also promotes long-term social integration and mutual understanding among different groups (Omo, 2024). Moreover, the integration of traditional values with religious teachings helps to bridge divides that might otherwise lead to violent conflict. However, despite their potential, the effectiveness of religious institutions in conflict resolution remains under-examined, particularly in Warri South, where multifaceted socio-political factors complicate the conflict landscape (Egbo, 2025). This study explores the role and impact of religious institutions in mitigating conflicts and contributing to sustainable peace in Warri South. By examining various mediation practices and their outcomes, the research aims to identify best practices that can be replicated in other conflict-prone areas.

Statement of the problem
In Warri South, recurring conflicts have strained community relationships and disrupted social stability. While religious institutions have often stepped in as mediators, their efforts are sometimes hampered by challenges such as sectarian bias, limited resources, and political interference (Ighogboja, 2023). The lack of a standardized framework for conflict resolution within these institutions further complicates their role. Consequently, although religious interventions have achieved partial success in de-escalating tensions, persistent disputes continue to afflict the community. The absence of comprehensive studies on the efficacy of these religious interventions has created a gap in understanding the true impact of faith-based conflict resolution. This gap undermines the potential for scaling successful practices to enhance peacebuilding efforts. As a result, there is an urgent need to evaluate how religious institutions can more effectively contribute to conflict resolution and sustainable community reconciliation (Omo, 2024; Egbo, 2025).

Objectives of the study

  • To assess the effectiveness of religious institutions in mediating conflicts in Warri South.

  • To identify the challenges faced by these institutions in conflict resolution.

  • To propose a framework for enhancing the role of religious organizations in promoting sustainable peace.

Research questions

  • How effective are religious institutions in resolving conflicts in Warri South?

  • What challenges impede the conflict resolution efforts of religious institutions?

  • What measures can strengthen the role of these institutions in peacebuilding?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Religious institutions significantly contribute to conflict resolution in Warri South.

  • H2: Challenges such as sectarian bias and resource limitations hinder the effectiveness of religious mediation.

  • H3: A standardized framework can enhance the conflict resolution capabilities of religious institutions.

Significance of the study
This study highlights the critical role of religious institutions in resolving conflicts in Warri South. The findings will guide policymakers and faith-based organizations in developing more effective conflict resolution strategies, fostering long-term peace and social cohesion in the community (Ighogboja, 2023; Omo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to evaluating the role of religious institutions in conflict resolution within Warri South Local Government Area. It does not extend to secular or governmental conflict resolution initiatives.

Definitions of terms

  • Religious Institutions: Organizations, such as churches and mosques, that provide spiritual guidance and community services.

  • Conflict Resolution: The process of resolving disputes and conflicts through dialogue and negotiation.

  • Peacebuilding: Efforts aimed at establishing lasting peace and preventing the recurrence of violence.
